Free VIN check — was it assembled in the US?

Paste the 17-character VIN. This reads NHTSA PlantCountry. It is a data check, not tax advice, and it does not decide whether any loan is deductible.

This page does not decide a return. AssemblyAlert never says a loan is deductible and never says a reader qualifies.

The IRS Working Families Tax Cuts deductions page (FS-2025-03) describes the car-loan interest deduction as effective for 2025 through 2028. The individuals and workers page says the same under “No tax on car loan interest (Section 70203).”

Topic no. 505 opens the car-loan paragraph with “For tax years 2025-2028.”

That window is the IRS’s stated life of this temporary deduction. It is not a promise that any particular loan is allowed in any of those years.

What it means for filers

  • 2025 is the first year the IRS pages describe. Lenders received transition relief for 2025 reporting on the Working Families Tax Cuts page.
  • 2026–2028 are later years in the same IRS window. Many filers should watch for a Form 1098-VLI or similar statement as reporting settles.
  • Interest paid outside those years is not what those IRS pages are describing.

The loan itself still has to originate after December 31, 2024, per Topic 505 and the Working Families Tax Cuts pages. A 2023 note is not rewritten because 2025 arrived.

Schedule 1-A is the 2025-return attachment the IRS created for these additional deductions, including Part IV car-loan interest. The form PDF is f1040s1a.pdf.

Common misconceptions

  • “Any car loan in 2025 qualifies.” No. Years are one gate. Used vehicles, leases, assembly, GVWR, MAGI, personal use, and the VIN-on-the-return rule remain.
  • “The VIN year is the tax year.” The VIN model year is a new-vehicle signal. The deduction years are calendar tax years 2025–2028.

How AssemblyAlert tools relate

The VIN checker scores plant country and a model-year / new-vehicle signal. It does not file a year. The 2025–2028 checklist lists the IRS gates in one place.
