Free VIN check — was it assembled in the US?
Paste the 17-character VIN. This reads NHTSA PlantCountry. It is a data check, not tax advice, and it does not decide whether any loan is deductible.
This page does not decide a return. AssemblyAlert never says a loan is deductible and never says a reader qualifies.
The IRS Working Families Tax Cuts — deductions for working Americans and seniors pages describe a temporary “No Tax on Car Loan Interest” deduction. In that section the IRS writes that the maximum annual deduction is $10,000. The companion Working Families Tax Cuts — individuals and workers page repeats the same $10,000 ceiling (Section 70203).
IRS Topic no. 505, Interest expense says, for tax years 2025–2028, you can take an annual deduction of up to $10,000 of qualified passenger vehicle loan interest.
That number is a cap on qualified interest, not $10,000 of cash back and not a rebate on the car.
What it means for filers
A deduction reduces taxable income. Any cash effect depends on whether the interest is qualified at all, MAGI phaseout, filing status, and the rest of the return. If you paid $12,400 of interest, the IRS annual line still starts at $10,000 before any phaseout — see the how-much guide.
Schedule 1-A, Additional Deductions (FS-2026-04) puts the car-loan interest computation in Part IV. The blank form is Form 1040 Schedule 1-A (PDF). Eligible taxpayers can use that schedule whether they itemize or take the standard deduction, per the IRS.
The interest statute sits in 26 U.S.C. § 163 (interest). Topic 505 is the IRS’s plain-language interest topic; it is not a prepared return.
Common misconceptions
- “The government pays me $10,000.” No. The IRS pages describe a deduction of qualified interest, up to $10,000.
- “Price / MSRP is the cap.” No. See no IRS purchase-price / MSRP cap. The interest cap and MAGI are the dollars gates the IRS lists.
- “I paid $8,000 of interest, so I get $8,000.” Only if that interest is qualified and survives every other gate. This site does not know that.
How AssemblyAlert tools relate
Use the interest / cap estimator to compare raw interest to the $10,000 line and an illustrated MAGI slider. Then paste the VIN in the free checker on this page. Plant-country Pass is not the deduction.
