When do you get Form 1098-VLI for the OBBBA car loan interest deduction?

Free VIN check — was it assembled in the US?
Paste the 17-character VIN. This reads NHTSA PlantCountry. It is a data check, not tax advice, and it does not decide whether any loan is deductible.
Form 1098-VLI arrives on a calendar, not on closing day.
This page is about timing: when lenders typically furnish the information statement for qualified vehicle loan interest, how that lines up with tax years 2025 through 2028, and what to do if the form is late or missing. For what the form is, see What is Form 1098-VLI?. For the folder list, see tax-season documents. This page does not decide a return. AssemblyAlert never says a loan is deductible and never says a reader qualifies.
The IRS Working Families Tax Cuts pages describe a temporary deduction for tax years 2025 through 2028 for interest on a loan used to purchase a qualified vehicle, up to $10,000 of qualified interest a year, with a MAGI phaseout over $100,000 ($200,000 joint). Those pages say lenders or other recipients of qualified interest must file information returns with the IRS and furnish statements to taxpayers showing the interest received during the taxable year. Topic no. 505 repeats the tax-year window and the United States final-assembly rule.
Check plant country now on the free homepage VIN checker. Paste the 17-character VIN. AssemblyAlert reads NHTSA vPIC `PlantCountry`. It passes US assembly only if `PlantCountry` is exactly `UNITED STATES (USA)`. Puerto Rico is not a pass. VIN position 1 is a WMI screen, never the verdict. Plant-country Pass is not the deduction.
You can also paste the same VIN in the free checker on this page. A dated AssemblyAlert record is not Form 1098-VLI.
The usual send window: early next year
Lenders report interest received during a taxable year. They then furnish the borrower statement after that year closes.
In practice, that means:
- A statement for loan-year 2025 interest is the one that would show up early in 2026
- A statement for 2026 interest is the one many filers should watch for around January 2027
- The same pattern repeats for 2027 and 2028 while the IRS window is still open
Statements usually arrive early the following calendar year — around January, and often by common information-return deadlines such as January 31. That January date is a typical furnish window for 1098-series statements, not a promise your envelope lands on a particular morning. Timing can move. Watch the IRS and your lender.
The IRS also said it would provide transition relief for tax year 2025 for interest recipients subject to the new reporting requirements. That is why some 2025 statements may be later — or look different — than a settled 2026+ Form 1098-VLI. Do not treat a late 2025 envelope as proof the loan fails, and do not treat an on-time envelope as proof the interest is allowed.
A timeline, not a qualification
| Interest year (tax year in the IRS window) | When the borrower statement typically arrives | What that envelope is not |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Early 2026 — and 2025 reporting had IRS transition relief | A determination that you qualify |
| 2026 | Around January 2027, often by common January deadlines | Proof of US final assembly |
| 2027 | Early 2028 | A rewrite of MAGI, leases, or used-vehicle rules |
| 2028 | Early 2029, after the last IRS-stated deduction year | A substitute for putting the VIN on the return |
Keep the statement with the loan packet when it arrives. Use the 2025–2028 checklist as the gate list. Use the interest estimator if you want to compare a dollar figure to the $10,000 cap. Fact cards print the same IRS-stated lines, including Form 1098-VLI and tax years 2025–2028.
If the form is late or missing
A late or missing 1098-VLI is a recordkeeping problem.
- Ask the lender for a copy, a reprint, or an equivalent interest statement.
- Keep your own amortization and payment records for that calendar year.
- Match the VIN on the statement to the dash plate and to the VIN you would put on the return. The IRS Working Families Tax Cuts pages say the taxpayer must include the VIN on the return for any year the deduction is claimed.
- If two VINs disagree, stop. Do not invent a number to force a pass.
Missing mail is not, by itself, a statutory disqualifier. Receiving a form is not a statutory qualifier. Software and IRS instructions for the year you file control what to do when a statement is missing. AssemblyAlert does not issue Form 1098-VLI and cannot reprint one.
What AssemblyAlert is on this calendar
This site is a dated NHTSA plant-country record. The free decode scores whether `PlantCountry` is exactly `UNITED STATES (USA)`. The optional $4 card is a printable spec sheet with a serial at `/v/{serial}`.
It is not:
- Form 1098-VLI
- A lender information return
- Proof the interest is allowed
- A substitute for putting the VIN on the return
A VIN on the lender statement helps identify the loan. It does not score assembly, MAGI, original use, or GVWR. Paste that same VIN in the free homepage VIN checker or the checker on this page. See Was my car assembled in the US? for how this site reads the field.
Other IRS gates a January envelope does not rewrite
Clearing the mail slot does not mean the interest is allowed.
- Tax years 2025 through 2028
- Up to $10,000 of qualified interest
- MAGI phaseout over $100,000 ($200,000 joint)
- Loan originated after December 31, 2024
- Used to purchase a vehicle — lease payments do not qualify (Do auto leases qualify?)
- Original use starts with the taxpayer — used vehicles do not qualify (Do used cars qualify?)
- Personal use; lien; GVWR under 14,000 pounds
- US final assembly — `PlantCountry === UNITED STATES (USA)`. Puerto Rico is not a pass. VIN position 1 is a WMI screen, never the verdict
- VIN on the return for any year the deduction is claimed
Form 1098-VLI is a lender information statement. Keep it with the loan docs. It is not proof of US assembly by itself.
FAQ
When should I look for 1098-VLI?

Does a January form mean I qualify?
No. The statement reports lender-side interest. This site never says a loan is deductible and never says a reader qualifies.
What if it never comes?
Ask the lender and keep your own records. Missing mail is not, by itself, the statutory test.
Is AssemblyAlert the form?
No. This site is a dated plant-country record, not Form 1098-VLI.
