How much is the car loan interest deduction worth?
The IRS cap is $10,000 of qualified interest per year, not $10,000 of cash back.
A deduction reduces taxable income. Any dollar effect depends on whether the interest is qualified at all, MAGI phaseout, and the rest of the return. These examples are illustrations, not advice. They assume the interest is otherwise qualified. AssemblyAlert does not know that.
Illustrative federal-bracket math
If $8,000 of interest were allowed under the $10,000 cap:
- 12% illustration: 0.12 × $8,000 = $960
- 22% illustration: 0.22 × $8,000 = $1,760
- 24% illustration: 0.24 × $8,000 = $1,920
If interest is $12,400, the IRS annual cap still limits the deduction to $10,000 before any MAGI reduction. Use the interest estimator to see cap vs raw interest. The MAGI slider is an OBBBA-statute illustration ($200 per $1,000 over the IRS threshold), not a prepared return.
Gates this chart does not decide
- Lease payments do not qualify (IRS Working Families Tax Cuts pages)
- Used vehicles do not qualify
- Final assembly must be in the United States — [check the VIN](/)
- Loan after December 31, 2024; personal use; lien; VIN on the return
Lease vs buy is the place to see a lease forfeit this deduction in a cash comparison.
