No. Lease payments do not qualify. This page does not decide a return. AssemblyAlert never says a purchase loan is deductible.

The IRS Working Families Tax Cuts deductions page describes interest paid on a loan used to purchase a qualified vehicle and, in the same sentence, states “(Lease payments do not qualify.)” The individuals and workers page repeats “Lease payments do not qualify.”

Schedule 1-A says Part IV is for interest paid or accrued on a loan used to purchase an applicable passenger vehicle for personal use, and again: lease payments do not qualify.

Topic no. 505 describes interest on indebtedness incurred after December 31, 2024, for the purchase of a vehicle, secured by a first lien. A lease is not that purchase loan.

What it means for filers

You are paying for the use of someone else’s vehicle. The IRS pages this site cites do not treat those payments as qualified passenger-vehicle loan interest.

A later refinance does not create a qualifying vehicle loan out of a lease. See does refinancing affect the deduction?.

Common misconceptions

  • “Money factor is interest, so it counts.” The IRS pages say lease payments do not qualify. They do not carve out money factor.
  • “A lease-to-own later fixes the lease years.” Lease years are still lease payments. A later purchase loan is a different instrument and still has to clear every other IRS gate.

How AssemblyAlert tools relate

The lease vs buy calculator flags that a lease forfeits this interest deduction in the cash comparison. It does not decide a purchase loan. Check assembly with the free VIN checker. Read the longer lease article.
