Free VIN check — was it assembled in the US?

Paste the 17-character VIN. This reads NHTSA PlantCountry. It is a data check, not tax advice, and it does not decide whether any loan is deductible.

Point at the dash plate or door sticker. Door sill vertical? Rotate, or turn the phone. Photos stay on this device.

This page is a folder list, not a determination that any loan is deductible and not a claim that you qualify.

The IRS Working Families Tax Cuts pages describe a temporary deduction for tax years 2025 through 2028 for interest on a loan used to purchase a qualified vehicle, up to $10,000 a year, with a MAGI phaseout over $100,000 ($200,000 joint). Lenders furnish interest statements. The VIN must be on the return for any year the deduction is claimed. AssemblyAlert does not issue those statements and does not file your return.

Check US final assembly now on the free homepage VIN checker or the free checker on this page. Plant-country Pass is not the deduction.

Why a folder exists before the form arrives

Many filers will not see Form 1098-VLI until well after the loan starts — often around January 2027 as 2026+ lender reporting settles. Timing can move. Watch the IRS and your lender.

You still need the VIN, the loan facts (purchase vs lease, origination date, lien, original use), and a US final-assembly record you can hand a preparer. A stack of paper does not create a deduction. It keeps the same vehicle and the same loan from getting mixed up later.

See What is Form 1098-VLI? for the lender statement. See When do you get Form 1098-VLI? for the January timing window. See VIN on the return for why the number has to leave the folder and go on the form.

Optional: an AssemblyAlert serial at `/v/{serial}` is a dated plant-country printout (and, if you paid, the open-recall PDF). It is a private vPIC snapshot. It is not Form 1098-VLI.

Paste the VIN you will put on the return in the free checker on this page. This site passes US assembly only when NHTSA `PlantCountry` is exactly `UNITED STATES (USA)`. Puerto Rico is not a pass. VIN position 1 is a WMI screen, never the verdict.

1098-VLI vs the plant-country printout

1098-VLI is the lender information statement for qualified passenger-vehicle loan interest. It reports interest the lender received. It does not score assembly, MAGI, original use, or GVWR.

AssemblyAlert reads public NHTSA vPIC. The free decode stays free. The optional $4 record is a dated vehicle spec sheet plus open-recall PDF — a folder document, not a government certificate.

If the two VINs disagree, stop and match the dash plate before anyone files. Do not invent a VIN to force a pass.

VIN on the return

Copy the 17 characters from the vehicle, not from a stock photo. Put that same VIN on the return for each year you claim the deduction. Year / make / model text is not a substitute on the lines that want the number.

A VIN on Schedule 1-A (or whatever form the year uses) does not mean the IRS has agreed the interest is allowed. It is the identifier the claim asks for. See Where do you put the VIN on your tax return?.

Leases and used vehicles still fail

A complete folder does not rewrite the IRS gates:

  • Lease payments do not qualify. See Do auto leases qualify?.
  • Used vehicles do not qualify. Original use must start with the taxpayer. See Do used cars qualify?.
  • Loan originated after December 31, 2024
  • Personal use, not business or commercial use
  • Secured by a lien on the vehicle
  • Vehicle type: car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup, or motorcycle
  • GVWR under 14,000 pounds
  • Final assembly in the United States
  • MAGI phaseout and the $10,000 annual cap still apply

Use the interest / OBBBA cap estimator to model the dollar cap and MAGI slider. Use the 2025–2028 checklist as a gate list. Read Was my car assembled in the US? for how this site scores PlantCountry. Fact cards print the same IRS-stated lines.

FAQ

What should I keep?

VIN, loan closing packet, 1098-VLI or equivalent when it arrives, and a dated US-assembly record. A folder is not a qualification.

Is 1098-VLI the AssemblyAlert printout?

No. One is a lender statement. The other is a dated vPIC plant-country record. Neither decides the return.

Does the VIN stay in the folder?

No. The IRS says include it on the return for any year the deduction is claimed.

If I keep everything, do leases or used cars qualify?

No. Lease payments do not qualify. Used vehicles do not qualify.

Does a pass here mean the loan is deductible?

No. This site never says a loan is deductible and never says a reader qualifies.
