What happened

On October 14, 2026, Toyota notified NHTSA of safety recall 26V673 (campaign 26V673000; Toyota recalls 26TA23 / 26TB23), subject: “Fuel Tubes May Disconnect and Leak.”

According to Toyota’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report and Defect Information Report, the affected SUVs “have a resin fuel tube on the fuel tank that connects to a main metal fuel tube to deliver fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. The connection between the resin fuel tube and the main metal fuel tube could disconnect if the retaining clip on the connector is lifted. If the fuel tubes disconnect at this connection, fuel may continue to leak until the engine in the hybrid system shuts off.”

Toyota says it began receiving U.S. field reports of fuel leaks on these vehicles in mid-July 2024, where dealer technicians found the retainer clip lifted or missing. Toyota’s testing found that a properly installed connector did not separate under pull, vibration, pressure or water-fording tests, and it has not identified a defect in the design of the connection or the manufacturing process; the cause and circumstances have not been confirmed. In a static test, an intentionally disconnected connection leaked “multiple gallons of fuel” before the engine shut off. Based on that leak volume and the number of field cases, Toyota decided on October 8, 2026, to conduct a voluntary recall. As of October 6, 2026, Toyota counted 23 field technical reports and 64 warranty claims from U.S. sources that relate or may relate to this condition.

FAQ

Is my Land Cruiser included?

Certain 2024–2027 Toyota Land Cruiser hybrids built from November 29, 2023, through October 1, 2026, are covered: 105,794 vehicles in the population Toyota reported to NHTSA. Toyota notes not every vehicle built in that range was sold in the U.S., so use a free VIN check to confirm.

What is the risk?

The fuel tube connection near the fuel tank may disconnect and leak fuel, and fuel may keep leaking until the hybrid system’s engine shuts off. Per NHTSA, a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Is it safe to drive?

NHTSA’s record does not set a do-not-drive or park-outside advisory. In Toyota’s testing, a stopped fuel pump triggered dashboard warnings and the vehicle continued in EV mode with reduced power until the hybrid battery ran down. If you smell fuel or see a leak, contact a Toyota dealer promptly.
