Severity: CRITICAL Severity: CRITICAL (red). Why: FCA US told NHTSA that “water may enter the electric power steering wiring harness, which can disable power steering assist,” and that “a loss of power steering assist can increase the risk of a crash” (NHTSA campaign 26V621000). Its Part 573 report says the loss can be “intermittent or permanent” and that there is no warning before it happens. NHTSA’s investigation notes that the van can still be steered, but with “increased steering effort.” Because steering assist can drop out suddenly and without warning, we rate this CRITICAL; it sits on the line between CRITICAL and HIGH, and we chose the higher level.

What happened

On September 29, 2026, Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) notified NHTSA of safety recall 26V621 (campaign 26V621000, Ram recall 92D) covering certain Ram ProMaster full-size vans. In its Part 573 Safety Recall Report, FCA US says some vans were built with an electric power steering (EPS) system that “may be susceptible to water intrusion leading to corrosion within the wiring harness.” Corroded wiring “can cause intermittent or permanent loss of power steering assist which may result in an inconsistent steering effort,” and “inconsistent steering effort can increase the risk of a crash.”

The affected vans were built from August 17, 2021, through October 18, 2025, when FCA US says vehicles stopped being built with the susceptible EPS. The replacement harnesses have improved sealing that keeps water out.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE26-002) on March 2, 2026, after owner complaints of intermittent or complete loss of power steering assist on ProMaster vans. FCA US reports finding 437 customer assistance records, 2,799 warranty claims and 191 field reports that may relate to the issue, plus 974 other reports, and says it is aware of one crash and no injuries potentially tied to it. It decided on September 22, 2026, that a safety defect exists.

What owners should do now

  1. Check your VIN at assemblyalert.com/recalls or nhtsa.gov/recalls for campaign 26V621000. VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov on October 6, 2026.
  2. Know the warning sign. FCA US says the EPS fault warning light may come on when power steering assist is lost. If it does, or steering suddenly feels heavy, slow down, get the van safely off the road and contact a Ram dealer.
  3. Get the free repair when it’s ready. Dealers will inspect and, if needed, replace the wiring harness and power steering gear at no charge. The remedy is not available yet; FCA US expects to launch it in the fourth quarter of 2026.
  4. Fleet operators: check every ProMaster VIN, and tell drivers what the EPS warning light means.
  5. Call Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403 and mention recall 92D.
  6. NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline: 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9171).

Interim owner letters are expected to mail November 17, 2026. You don’t need to wait for a letter to check your VIN.

FAQ

Is my ProMaster included?

Certain 2022–2026 Ram ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500 vans and 2024–2026 ProMaster 3500 EVs are involved, 265,512 in total. Use a VIN check to confirm.

Will the steering stop working completely?

FCA US says the power steering assist can be lost, intermittently or permanently. NHTSA’s investigation describes the result as increased steering effort to control the vehicle. That sudden change in steering effort is what raises the crash risk.

Is it safe to drive?

NHTSA’s record does not set a do-not-drive or park-outside advisory for this campaign. Check your VIN, and if the EPS warning light comes on or steering gets heavy, pull over safely and contact a dealer.

When is the fix, and what does it cost?

The inspection and any harness or steering gear replacement are free. The remedy is not available yet; FCA US estimates a fourth-quarter 2026 launch and will send interim letters starting November 17, 2026, with more letters once the fix is ready.
