Paste the 17-character VIN. This reads NHTSA PlantCountry. It is a data check, not tax advice, and it does not decide whether any loan is deductible.
Severity: CRITICAL Severity: CRITICAL (red). Why: Hyundai told NHTSA that prolonged seat-motor operation “may result in overheating, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire while driving or parked,” and NHTSA’s record sets a park-outside advisory (`parkOutSide` true; subject line “Park Outside: Fire from Overheated Power Seat Motors”) for campaign 26V664000. Fire plus park-outside is CRITICAL.

What happened
On October 8, 2026, Hyundai Motor America notified NHTSA of safety recall 26V664 (campaign 26V664000; Hyundai recall 308 / Genesis recall 035G), subject: “Park Outside: Fire from Overheated Power Seat Motors.”
In its Part 573 Safety Recall Report, Hyundai says the front seat slider and height adjustment control switch used on non-memory power seats in the subject vehicles “may become dislodged or damaged when subjected to external force(s), potentially causing the switch to remain engaged and the seat adjustment motor to operate continuously, even after the occupant exits the vehicle.” “Prolonged motor operation over time may result in overheating, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire while driving or parked.”
Warnings Hyundai lists: (1) burning odor from the seat, and (2) inoperative seat control switch(s).
Hyundai’s chronology says it first became aware of a U.S. Speak Up For Safety report on a 2018 Genesis G80 on December 31, 2021, recovered and analyzed a seat assembly in late 2023, continued monitoring field data, then reviewed additional Korea-market information in 2026. On October 1, 2026, Hyundai’s North American Safety Decision Authority decided on a U.S. safety recall. As of that decision, Hyundai reports two alleged fire incidents in the U.S. market and no crashes or injuries related to this condition in the U.S.
NHTSA’s acknowledgment letter (October 14, 2026) notes that an amended Part 573 is required because a full remedy description is not yet supplied (“Remedy Not Supplied”).
Which vehicles are included
| Make | Model | Model years | Built (per Part 573) | Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai | Genesis | 2015–2016 | Feb 21, 2014 – Feb 24, 2016 | 54,644 |
| Genesis | G80 | 2017–2020 | Mar 17, 2016 – Nov 7, 2019 | 39,978 |
| Total | 94,622 |
These are DH-generation sedans sold in the U.S. (the Hyundai Genesis badge gave way to the Genesis G80 nameplate). The recall applies to vehicles with the described non-memory power seat switch assemblies — not every Genesis or G80 of every year. A VIN check is the way to confirm whether a specific vehicle is included.
What owners should do now
- Park outside. Until the repair is done, Hyundai and Genesis recommend parking outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures.
- Check your VIN at assemblyalert.com/recalls or nhtsa.gov/recalls for campaign 26V664000.
- Watch for warning signs. A burning odor from the seat area or an inoperative seat control switch are the warnings Hyundai lists. If you notice either, contact a Hyundai dealer or Genesis retailer and do not ignore it.
- Wait for the free remedy. The fix is still being developed. When it is ready, dealers/retailers will perform it at no cost (including vehicles outside the new-vehicle limited warranty, per the Part 573 plan). Owner letters are expected around early December 2026.
- Call customer service: Hyundai 1-855-371-9460 (recall 308); Genesis 844-340-1200 (recall 035G), per NHTSA’s campaign record.
- NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline: 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9171).
You don’t need to wait for a letter to check your VIN or follow the park-outside advice.
FAQ
Is my Hyundai Genesis or Genesis G80 included?
This campaign covers certain 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis and certain 2017–2020 Genesis G80 vehicles — 94,622 in the U.S. population Hyundai reported. Production windows are Feb 21, 2014 – Feb 24, 2016 (Genesis) and Mar 17, 2016 – Nov 7, 2019 (G80), and the defect description applies to non-memory power seat switches. Use a VIN check to confirm.
Why park outside?
NHTSA’s record sets a park-outside advisory because a fire can occur while the vehicle is parked (or while driving). Parking outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures reduces the chance that a fire spreads to a garage, home, or nearby cars.
Is there a do-not-drive order?
No. `parkIt` is false. The advisory is park-outside, not do-not-drive. Still treat burning odor or a stuck/inoperative seat switch as a reason to get the vehicle looked at promptly.
When is the fix, and what does it cost?
The remedy is under development and will be free when available. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 7, 2026. Hyundai: 1-855-371-9460 (308). Genesis: 844-340-1200 (035G).
